The Congregational Prayer
English translation
Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Prayer in congregation is twenty-seven degrees better than prayer offered alone.”
*Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 645.*
What Is Congregational Prayer?
Congregational prayer, or *Salat al-Jama‘ah*, means praying together with other Muslims under the leadership of an imam. The worshippers follow the imam’s movements during the prayer. They bow and prostrate after him and stand in straight rows. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Muslims to follow the imam and straighten their rows.
Understanding the Reward
This hadith teaches us the great value of praying together. Congregational prayer has a reward twenty-seven degrees greater than praying alone. It is often explained as being twenty-seven times better. This encourages Muslims to make an effort to join others in prayer.
The reward reminds us that prayer deserves our time and attention. When we prepare for prayer and join the congregation, we put worship at the centre of our day.
What Can We Learn from Praying Together?
Congregational prayer brings Muslims together. People of different ages and backgrounds stand beside one another, facing the same direction and worshipping Allah. This can strengthen friendship and remind us to treat others with respect.
Following the imam also helps us practise patience and discipline. We pay attention, wait for his movements and avoid rushing ahead. These habits can help us become more thoughtful in our daily lives.
How Should We Behave?
We should arrive calmly, prepare properly for prayer and respect the people around us. During the prayer, we should focus on worship, avoid distracting others and follow the imam carefully.
Imagine praying beside a friend. Instead of talking or playing, you both stand quietly and concentrate. You are helping one another take prayer seriously.
The hadith encourages us to appreciate the blessing of worshipping together. Congregational prayer gives us an opportunity to seek Allah’s reward while practising unity, patience and respect.
